Origin and history

The University of Pont-à-Mousson was founded in 1572 by Duke Charles III of Lorraine and his cousin, the cardinal of Lorraine, under the direction of the Jesuits. From 1575, Pope Gregory XIII granted him a university charter, making him a centre of higher secondary education and major university in Lorraine. The institution attracted renowned scholars and formed prominent intellectual figures of the time.

In 1766, after the death of King Stanislas and the attachment of Lorraine to France, the Jesuits were expelled two years later. By a royal edict of Louis XV in 1768, the university was transferred to Nancy, ending its activity at Pont-à-Mousson. The buildings, partially preserved, today bear witness to this prestigious past.

Among the protected elements, facades on the inner courtyard were listed as historical monuments in 1926, followed by the parlor gate in 1947. These remains recall the cultural and religious importance of the institution, linked to the Society of Jesus and the educational history of Lorraine.

The university included among its teachers and students personalities such as Jean Fourier, rector and former student, and Pierre-Joseph Thoulier d'Olivet. These figures illustrate the intellectual influence of Pont-à-Mousson, which competed with other European university centres of the time.
