The manor house (inside and outside) (Case A 433, 434): inscription by order of 6 March 1964
Origin and history
The Gravoux mansion, located in Saint-Genès-de-Castillon en Gironde, dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. This historic monument is distinguished by its defensive and architectural elements typical of the late Middle Ages. The partially preserved round road once surrounded the home, although later modifications (such as the overcasting of the frame) altered some sections. The ravens supporting the old structure remain, reflecting its original appearance.
A spiral staircase is housed in the round tower, which is capped with pepper, while a corner squad, supported by corbellations, still dominates the building. In contrast, traces reveal the location of a second scald that is now extinct. The mâchicoulis, decorated with clover motifs, add a decorative dimension to their defensive function. Inside, 16th-century chimneys, with carved pedestals, remind us of the subsequent improvements to the mansion.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 6 March 1964, the Gravoux mansion includes in its protection all its interior and exterior spaces. Defensive elements (turns, scalables, mâchicoulis) illustrate the security concerns of the period, while sculptural details reflect the evolution of artistic tastes between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), suggests a rural site, far from the major urban axes of the Gironde.
