Origin and history

The Urbain II Fountain, also known as Monument des Crusades, is an iconic work located Place de la Victoire in Clermont-Ferrand. It was designed to mark the eighth centenary of the call for the first crusade, launched by Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont in 1095. The idea of the monument emerged in 1895, and its realization ended in 1898, the year of its inauguration on 1 October. The fountain combines Volvic lava architectural elements, typical of the region, and a bronze statue representing Urban II, oriented towards the cathedral.

The architecture of the fountain, signed Jean Teillard, combines neo-Gothic and neo-classical influences, with a stylized animal decor. The sommital statue, carved by Henri Gourgouillon, shows the pope designating the Holy Land, recalling its historical role in the mobilization of crusades. This monument, inscribed in historical monuments since 1994, symbolizes both the religious heritage of Clermont-Ferrand and its 19th century artistic heritage.

The fountain is part of a broader commemorative context, linked to the medieval identity of the city. Its location on the Place de la Victoire, opposite the cathedral, reinforces its link with local history and the Council of 1095. The materials used, such as Volvic's lava, highlight the regional anchoring of the work, while its eclectic style reflects the artistic trends of the late nineteenth century in France.

Classified as a communal property, the fountain is protected for its historical and artistic value. Its registration in 1994 demonstrates its importance in the Clermont heritage. The available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its status as an emblematic monument, both a place of memory and a major urban element.
