Origin and history
Vanvey's washhouse is an iconic 18th-century building built between 1770 and 1773 on the banks of the Urce River, in the commune of Vanvey en Côte-d'Or. This monument is distinguished by its elegant architecture, combining fifteen wooden arches resting on stone bases, offering a total opening on the river. It is considered one of the most beautiful washhouses of the Châtillonnais, both for its design and for its harmonious integration into the river landscape.
Since June 24, 1976, the washhouse has benefited from a recent renovation, the artistic aspect of which was entrusted to contemporary artist Annette Messenger. This monument, owned by the commune, bears witness to the importance of washbasins in the daily life of Burgundy villages, places of sociability and collective work before the arrival of running water.
The precise location of the washhouse is indicated as the 9001 Chemin des Vergers in Vanvey, in the Côte-d'Or department. Its state of conservation and its heritage value make it a point of interest for lovers of rural architecture and local history, as evidenced by the references available in the Mérimée bases and regional publications, such as those of René Paris on the Châtillonnais.
