Gate of Varenne and the remains of the surrounding ramparts: inscription by decree of 13 February 1928
Origin and history
La Porte de Varenne is a former fortified gate in the commune of Hérisson, in the department of Allier, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Built in the 14th century, it is the last vestige of the low fortifications that once protected the city. Its architecture reflects medieval defensive techniques, typical of the small fortified cities of this time.
Filed under the title of historical monuments by order of 13 February 1928, the Varenne Gate is now owned by the municipality. It shows the strategic importance of Hérisson in the Middle Ages, when the ramparts played a key role in protecting local people and activities, such as agriculture, crafts and commerce. These fortifications were often accompanied by fortified doors, which were essential control points for regulating entrances and exits.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its status as a protected monument and its inclusion in the French architectural heritage. The gate is located precisely at 10 Rue de l'Enfer, although the accuracy of this location is considered poor (level 5 of 10). No information is provided on its current accessibility or possible tourist use.
