Origin and history

The church of Vaux-le-Bardoult, dedicated to Saint Mark, finds its origins at the end of the thirteenth century, although its major reconstruction took place in the eighteenth century. The works, interrupted by the French Revolution, left the building without a bell tower. This monument, typical of Norman rural churches, thus blends a 14th century medieval choir with a nave rebuilt in 1761, completed by a square tower forming porch to the west.

Desacralized in 2004 after centuries of Catholic worship, the church was taken over by the commune and then by the community of communes of the Orne Sources. Transformed into a versatile cultural centre, it now hosts exhibitions, concerts and conferences, illustrating a successful heritage conversion. Its inscription in the Historic Monuments since 1972 underscores its architectural and historical value.

Originally located in Vaux-le-Bardoult, a hamlet absorbed in 1839 by Montgaroult (now in 2018 a delegated commune of Monts-sur-Orne), the church reflects the territorial changes of Orne. Its current address, 38 Vaux-le-Bardoult in Monts-sur-Orne (61150), and its Insee code (61194) anchor in the Norman landscape, between Alençon and the sources of Orne. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be satisfactory a priori (level 6/10).
