Origin and history
The ramparts of Moret-sur-Loing form a complex of fortifications located in the delegated municipality of Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne, Seine-et-Marne (Île-de-France). They extend mainly along the left bank of the Loing and on the Champ-de-Mars square in the historic city centre. These remains, partially preserved, illustrate the strategic importance of the city at a time when the ramparts were used to protect the inhabitants and to control access, including via gates such as the one in Paris.
The administrative history of the ramparts is marked by two successive inscriptions as historical monuments: the fragments downstream of the bridge, as well as the adjacent wharf and washhouse, were protected by order of 12 April 1926. A second part, located north of the western façade of the Porte de Paris, was inscribed on June 8, 1939. These protections concern both communal and private property, reflecting the complexity of their heritage management.
No specific information is available on the exact period of construction of the ramparts or on the specific historical events related to them. However, their presence attests to the defensive and urban role of Moret-sur-Loeng, a city whose history is closely linked to its river, the Loing, and its geographical location in Île-de-France. The ramparts, now partially visible, offer an overview of medieval fortification techniques and their integration into the urban landscape.
