Origin and history
The archaeological remains of Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer correspond to the remains of a Roman villa discovered in the territory of the commune. These remains, dated from ancient times, are spread over several plots, some of which were protected by registration orders in 1952 and 1958. The elements retained include portions of land containing ancient structures, although their precise location is considered poor (level 5 on a precision scale).
The legal protection of these remains has been formalized by three separate decrees. The first, dated 3 November 1952, concerns a parcel (cadastre B 721) and an adjacent triangular portion (cadastre B 722), both associated with the Roman villa. A third decree, dated 30 June 1958, extends protection to a wider area (cadastre AR 115, 161, 162) containing other archaeological remains. These measures reflect the heritage importance of the site, despite the lack of specific architectural details in available sources.
Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, located in the Var (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), is part of a territory marked by an ancient Roman occupation. The villas of that time often served as agricultural residences or resorts for elites, illustrating the way of life and economic organization of the area under the Roman Empire. Their presence attests to cultural and commercial exchanges in the Mediterranean, although local remains did not provide detailed information about their occupants or their exact function.
