Origin and history
The castle of Pechbonnieu, built in the seventeenth century, underwent a large campaign of construction in the second half of the eighteenth century. The current remains bear witness to this period, including the chapel decorated with stuccos dated 1778 and signed by artisan Lacombe. These decorations, characteristic of late baroque art, mark the architectural climax of the site before its decline.
In the 19th century, the castle was described as in ruins, reflecting a gradual abandonment. Only the chapel, integrated into a private home at the end of the 19th century, partially survived. The remaining remains, including the chapel house and the chaplain's room, were protected by decrees in 1993 and 1995, highlighting their heritage value.
Today, the site belongs to the commune of Pechbonnieu, located in Haute-Garonne. Although its state of conservation is considered poor (inaccurate location, note 5/10), the classified elements provide an overview of local history. The absence of detailed sources on its initial use or its owners limits the understanding of its social role, typical of the rural castles of the Ancien Régime in Occitanie.
