Origin and history

The remains of Marqueyssac Castle, located in Saint-Pantaly-d'Ans in the commune of Cubjac-Auvezère-Val d'Ans, date from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. This monument is emblematic of the castles built at the beginning of this period, reflecting the architectural and social characteristics of the period. Its present state makes it possible to apprehend the spatial and defensive organization typical of the seigneurial residences of this region.

The castle is closely linked to the family of Hautefort, whose power and influence it embodies in the region. Although the precise details of its construction or occupants are not mentioned, its inscription as Historic Monument by order of 13 June 2013 underscores its heritage importance. Protected remains include all remaining structures as well as their plate plot, showing a desire to preserve.

The location of the castle, in the Dordogne department in New Aquitaine, is part of a territory marked by a feudal and seigneurial rich history. At that time, castles served not only as aristocratic residences, but also as symbols of local domination. Their architecture, often imposing, reflected both defensive needs and a demonstration of prestige, in a society still very hierarchical.
