All the remains of the Château de Montséret, namely the whole of the castral site (castral castle and village) including the land base, the soil and the basement of the plot – as delimited in red on the plan annexed to the decree – located in La Bouiche, on Parcel B 658: inscription by order of 15 March 2024
Origin and history
The remains of the Château de Monséret are located in the commune of Montséret, in the department of Aude (region Occitanie, formerly Languedoc-Roussillon). This castral site, which includes both the remains of the castle and those of a fortified village, has been officially recognized as a Historic Monument by a registration order dated 15 March 2024. The protected complex covers Parcel B 658, at the place called La Bouiche, including the ground, basement and land base, delimited on a plan annexed to the Order. The property now belongs to the commune of Montséret.
Castral sites such as Monseret played a central role in the medieval organization of Occitan territory. They served as both a refuge for local populations, an administrative centre for lords, and a strategic point of control over the lines of communication. Although the specific details of the history of this castle are rare in the available sources, its recent inscription underlines its heritage and archaeological importance for understanding the defence and social systems of the Middle Ages in the region.
The location of the site, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the databases, suggests that its exact location or boundaries could be further clarified. No information is provided on its accessibility to the public, its current tourist vocation (visits, accommodation), or possible archaeological excavations carried out on site. Available data are mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, supplemented by approximate GPS coordinates.
