Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman remains of Andernos-les-Bains are substructions located in the old cemetery, south of the church of Saint-Eloi. These ruins, classified as historical monuments in 1933, evoke an ancient basilica. The main ship ends with an apse reinforced by foothills, surrounded by a circular wall. Adjunct premises border the nave, and the construction uses rubble squared with a lime mortar.
The archaeological site, owned by the commune, is located precisely at 42 Boulevard de la Plage, in the department of Gironde (Nouveau-Aquitaine). Its state of conservation and structure suggest a religious or public function during the Gallo-Roman period. The available data (Merimée, Wikipedia) confirm its heritage importance, although its exact use and sponsor remains undocumented in the sources.
The area, under Roman rule, was marked by a hierarchical social organization, where public buildings such as this basilica played a central role in community life. Local activities probably included agriculture, trade and crafts, with strong Roman cultural influence, visible in architecture and construction techniques such as the use of lime mortar.
