Origin and history
The ancient camp of Castel Du, located in Langoat, Brittany, is a fortified site dating back to ancient times. Located 28 metres above sea level, it overlooks the Pont Chief (or Penn ar Pont), a strategic passage sensitive to the tides allowing to cross the Jaudy. The site provided military and logistical control over this natural crossing, which was essential for travel and exchange at the time.
The enclosure, roughly triangular in shape with rounded corners, measures about 120 meters per side. It is 20 metres wide at its base and about 10 metres high, surrounded by a partially drowned ditch. Inside, a flat space of 4,500 m2 suggests deliberate planning, perhaps for housing or military activities. A round road, still visible today, runs to the top of the wooded enclosure, offering panoramic views of the surroundings.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 30 October 1957, the site covers nearly two hectares. Its present state makes it possible to imagine its defensive and symbolic role during antiquity, although the precise archaeological traces of its occupation or its builders remain limited. The location, noted as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), makes it a rare testimony of the fortifications of this period in interior Brittany.
No sources mention any specific historical characters or events related to this camp. Its main interest lies in its architecture and strategic position, reflecting defence and spatial planning techniques during the Iron Age or the Gallo-Roman period. The vestiges, now accessible, invite you to a historic walk in the heart of a landscape marked by nearly two millennia of history.
