The road cross used in a fence wall sis rue Pierre-Eyrols, mistakenly located in the commune of Tulle, is located in Vignols: inscription by decree of 11 September 2013, amending the decree of 19 March 1927
Origin and history
The road cross of Vignols is a historical monument dating from the 15th century, located in the New Aquitaine region. This vestige, whose foot is now missing, has been integrated into a wall, probably at a later time. Only the upper part remains, representing the head of Christ and his two cross arms, characteristic of medieval representations of crucifixion.
Initially protected by an order of 1927, this cross was subject to an administrative correction in 2013: its registration under the Historical Monuments was specified to correct an error of location, permanently placing it in Vignols and not in Tulle, as previously mentioned in the databases. The monument is now used in a fence wall, rue Pierre-Eyrols, illustrating a common practice of reusing heritage elements in local architecture.
The cross of paths, frequent in rural areas, served both as landmarks for travellers and as means of devotion. Their presence often marked crossroads or parish boundaries, playing a social and religious role in medieval communities. The partial preservation of this cross bears witness to the transformation of these monuments over the centuries, between abandonment, reuse and late heritage recognition.
