Stone road cross of the 16th century: classification by decree of 3 June 1908

Origin and history

The road cross of Viocourt is a 16th century stone monument. It is located in the commune of Viocourt, in the department of Vosges (88), in the region of Lorraine (now Grand Est). This type of monument, typical of the French countryside, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 3 June 1908, this cross is now owned by the municipality. Crosses of road, frequent in rural areas, often marked crossroads, boundaries of territories or places of assembly. Their presence reflected the importance of religion in the daily life of modern peasant communities and their role in the spatial and social organization of villages.
