Pont sur la Vézère (old) (cad. not cadastre): classification by decree of 14 October 1969

Origin and history

The old bridge of Vigeois, nicknamed "bridge of the English", is a medieval building built in the 15th century on the Vézère, in the commune of Vigeois (Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine). It is located north of the village, at the site of an old ford passage, and marks a strategic crossing point of the river. Its architecture combines robustness and ingenuity, with defensive or practical elements such as almond forks serving as refuges.

Ranked a historic monument since October 14, 1969, the bridge is distinguished by its four arches arched in the middle of the hangar and a slightly broken apron in the centre. The piles, which are stunned upstream by broken fore-beeks, support "avoidance stations" at the apron, while the avalanche has weak foothills. The irregular stone apparatus, except at the base of the forebeeks, and the flared parapets at the entrances reflect medieval construction techniques adapted to local constraints.

The bridge, owned by the commune, illustrates the civil engineering of the medieval Limousin, where bridges played a key role in trade exchanges, pilgrimages (as to Santiago de Compostela) and territorial defence. Its protection as historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its anchoring in local history. The sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its status as an emblematic element of the Correzian heritage.
