Origin and history
The villa Costa is a villa built in 1884 in the Roucas-Blanc district, in the 7th arrondissement of Marseille. It is distinguished by its rocky wall decor, one of the largest in the Marseille region, and by the preservation of its original polychromy. The facades, covered with decorative cement, were made by the Gagliardone family, famous rockers, on the order of the Costa spouses. Although the garden remains only in residual condition, the facades and rock elements of the garden have been well preserved.
All the facades and roofs of the villa, as well as the fence walls with their gate and the rock works of the garden, were inscribed as historical monuments by order of 28 October 2015. This inscription recognizes the heritage value of the work, which is also well documented, offering a rare testimony of the 19th century Marseille rock art.
The Costa villa is located at the 8th crossing of Vallon de l'Ortignes and rue Célina, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It illustrates the influence of bourgeois families of the time, who invested in adorned residences, reflecting their social status and taste for local craftsmanship. The cement decorations, typical of the region, show a remarkable technical and artistic mastery for the time.
