Origin and history
The Villa des Montis, located in Haute-Goulaine (Loire-Atlantique), is a neo-classical residence built in the early 19th century. The fief des Montys, mentioned in 1414 as the property of Jean de Saint-Aignan, today preserves only an isolated tower of the former seigneurial house. After the Revolution, the estate was acquired around 1810 by the French architect François-Léonard Seheult, who erected the present castle in 1813, representative of the pure management style. Seheult, a famous figure in the region, is also known for its cariatide building in Nantes, rue de l'Heronnière.
The villa, surrounded by a park including factories (chapel, tower, tempietto), was listed as historical monuments by order of 24 March 1997. His descendants emigrated in part to the United States and Canada. The site, still located at the approximate address of the 35 Impasse des Montys, bears witness to the architectural and landscape heritage of this period.
The monument illustrates the evolution of seigneurial properties into post-revolutionary bourgeois domains, marking the transition from an Earth aristocracy to an economic and intellectual elite. Its sober, geometrical style reflects the aesthetic ideals of the Empire and Restoration, while integrating neoclassical elements inspired by antiquity. The 1997 protection underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its landscaped park, characteristic of the rural residences of the early 19th century.
