Origin and history
The Châteaulier villa, located in Saint-Léger-les-Vignes in the Loire-Atlantique department, is an emblematic monument of the neo-classical style. This building, originally a former seigneury heavily damaged during the Renaissance, was restored and enlarged between 1830 and 1834. The architect Louis-Joseph Chaigneau carried out these works, restoring instead a majestic look peculiar to the aesthetics of the nineteenth century.
The villa was listed as historic monuments on 30 January 1997, recognizing its heritage value. This classification protects in particular the main structure, identified under cadastre A 816. The site, now known as 5130 Le Châtelier, remains an architectural testimony of neo-classical influence in the Pays de la Loire region.
Saint-Léger-les-Vignes, a rural commune of Loire-Atlantique, was in modern times a territory marked by agriculture and small seigneuries. Villas like Le Châtelier often reflected the social status of their owners, while serving as secondary residences for local elites. These buildings were part of the transformation of rural landscapes, mixing medieval heritage and 19th century architectural innovations.
