Origin and history
The Villa du Plessis-Grimaud is a bourgeois residence in Saint-Viaud, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built between 1826 and 1846, it embodies the architectural transition to the romantic era, with a plan and aesthetic characteristic of this period. Its location, on a hill overlooking the Loire, recalls the former mansion from which it took its place, although no trace of it remains today.
The villa was commissioned by widow Carroux, a local figure whose project reflected the aspirations of a rising bourgeoisie in the 19th century. Since 1973, it has belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Galouzeau de Villepin. The monument was listed as historic monuments by order of 16 April 1997, recognizing its heritage value and its role in regional architectural history.
The site, now protected, bears witness to both the evolution of the aristocratic and bourgeois lifestyles and the adaptation of the Ligerian landscapes to the new aesthetic trends of the 19th century. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location (cadastre D 647) make it a documented example of the built heritage of the Loire-Atlantique, open to contemporary uses such as visits or private events.
