Origin and history

Villa El Patio is an emblematic house located at 27 boulevard du Parc-Imperial in Nice, in the Russian quarter, opposite the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. Built between 1906 and 1908, it embodies the Hispano-Mauresque style, with a rectangular patio surrounded by arcade galleries and covered with a zenithal window. Its decor is inspired directly by the Alhambra of Granada, offering a unique architecture in the Nice landscape of the early twentieth century.

The building was designed by architect Aaron Messiah for Martin Masse, notary clerk and consul of Monaco in Nice. Although some sources mention an unknown architect, Aaron Messiah is explicitly cited as the prime contractor. The villa has been listed as a historical monument since 1 September 1999 and has been awarded the 20th century heritage label, highlighting its architectural and cultural importance.

The villa is distinguished by its three-storey structure, its roof terrace, and its up-to-date central patio, a rare element in the residential architecture of the period. It illustrates the urbanization of the Russian quarter at the beginning of the twentieth century, marked by the influence of foreign communities and an eclectic aesthetic. The facades, the roof, the fence wall with its gate, and the access gate are protected as historical monuments.

Located in the Alpes-Maritimes, Villa El Patio also reflects the cultural dynamism of Nice at this time, between Mediterranean heritage and exotic influences. Its state of conservation and its integration into the urban landscape make it a valuable testimony to the seaside architecture of the French Riviera.
