Origin and history

Villa La Sapinière, located in Evian-les-Bains, is an iconic 19th-century historical monument. Built in 1896 by the architect Jean Camille Formigé for Joseph Vitta, it embodies the Florentine quattrocento style, a rare architectural choice for the time in France. This style, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, is distinguished by its clean lines, harmonious proportions and references to the Florentine palaces of the 15th century. The villa is also distinguished by the quality of its interior decorations, designed by major artists of the period.

The interiors of Villa La Sapinière have been enriched by exceptional artistic collaborations. Jules Cheret made wall paintings, while Félix Bracquemond carved wooden elements and Alexandre Charpentier designed the furniture, especially for the billiard room. Auguste Rodin, on the other hand, carved the stone door tops of the Estaillade, representing Les Quatre Saisons. These contributions make the villa a unique testimony of decorative art of the late 19th century, combining architecture, painting, sculpture and design.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 18 February 1987, Villa La Sapinière is now the property of an association. Its official address, 20 avenue de Noailles, makes it a central place in the heritage of Evian-les-Bains. Although sources mention potential uses such as room rental or guest rooms, no specific information is available on its current accessibility. The villa remains a remarkable example of the architectural and artistic eclecticism of the Belle Époque, a period marked by a creative abundance and a pronounced taste for historical references.

The location of the villa, in Haute-Savoie, is part of a regional context where Évian-les-Bains, a famous spa resort since the 19th century, attracted an easy and cultivated clientele. This public, sensitive to the arts and architecture, has favoured the commissioning of ambitious buildings such as Villa La Sapinière. The choice of the quattrocento style also reflects the influence of travel in Italy, then very popular with European elites, and the desire to import prestigious aesthetic models. The villa thus illustrates the cultural exchanges and social aspirations of its time.
