Origin and history

The Villa les Tourelles, built in 1898 in Port-des-Barques, is a typical example of the historicist architecture of the late 19th century. In the Anglo-Gothic castel style, it is distinguished by its brick facade decorated with niches, two round towers at the front, and square towers at the back. Its square plan and curved bays reflect the architectural eclecticism of the time, mixing medieval and romantic influences.

The villa is located at 5 avenue de l'Île-Madame, in a maritime setting that reinforces its picturesque character. It was registered as historic monuments by order of 11 December 1992, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Protected elements include facades and roofs, demonstrating the importance of its conservation.

The building illustrates a tendency of the time to be inspired by medieval castles, especially English, for bourgeois residences or seaside. This style, called "neogothic", was particularly popular for coastal villas, where it evoked both prestige and a form of romantic escape. The Villa les Tourelles thus embodies an architectural heritage linked to the rise of seaside resorts in France at the end of the 19th century.
