Origin and history

The village cross of Châtenois is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Vosges (Great East region). Dated from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, more precisely from 1746, it is classified as Historic Monument by order of 23 July 1909. This type of cross, often erected at crossroads or in village centres, served as a spiritual and social landmark for the inhabitants.

In the 18th century, the village crosses were central elements of community life in Lorraine. They often marked a place of assembly, prayer or commemoration, reflecting the importance of the Catholic religion in daily life. Their presence also reflects the social organization and local cultural practices, where religious monuments played a symbolic and practical role.

The location of this cross, rue du Breuil, suggests a strategic location in the urban fabric of Châtenois.
