Origin and history

La Croix des Vierges is a monument located in the commune of Nogent-sur-Oise, in the department of Oise (60), in the Hauts-de-France region. It was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 30 May 1927, which reflects its local heritage importance. This type of cross, often erected at intersections or in city centres, was generally used as a religious or commemorative landmark for the inhabitants.

In the Hauts-de-France, as in other French regions, monumental crosses were common in villages and small towns. They played a strong symbolic role, often linked to the Christian faith or local events. Their presence reflected the social and religious organization of the communities, where these monuments served as gathering points or visual landmarks in the urban or rural landscape.

The Cross of the Virgins, although little documented in available sources, is part of this tradition.
