Origin and history

The dungeon of La Salle is a fortified building located in the commune of La Salle, in Saône-et-Loire. Dating from the 10th and 13th centuries, it illustrates medieval defensive architecture typical of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument, now partially preserved, bears witness to the construction techniques and strategic needs of the feudal era, where the dungeons served both as refuge and symbol of seigneurial power.

Ranked as historical monuments since December 20, 1991, the La Salle dungeon also includes surrounding remains and a chapel. This classification protects an architectural complex comprising the dungeon itself and adjacent elements, reflecting the heritage importance of the site. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a Historical Monument and specify its exact location in the department of Saône-et-Loire, near Mâcon.
