Origin and history

Saint-Martial de Gentioux-Pigrolles Church, located in the Creuse department in New Aquitaine, is a religious building built mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries. It is distinguished by its rectangular four-span architecture, the last of which forms the choir. Its polygonal capitals, decorated with sculptures depicting flowers and animals, as well as its three-piece portal with hooked capitals and human masks, bear witness to a rich medieval heritage. The church suffered a fire around 1357, then was rebuilt around 1425, incorporating stylistic elements of each era.

Church history is closely linked to religious and military orders. It was first the capital of the command office of Gentioux, before becoming a member of the command office of Carrières, dependent on the great priory of Auvergne. This link with the Hospitallers of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (or Order of Malta) and, previously, with the Templars, underscores its strategic and religious importance in the region. The building, which underwent several restoration campaigns (including in 1818 and 1847-1849), saw its original bell tower replaced by a modern bell tower in the 19th century. It has been listed as historical monuments since 1926.

Historical sources also mention its state of disrepair at the beginning of the nineteenth century, having required urgent work on several occasions. In 1817, a report reported his poor condition, followed by a contract to Laurent Palisson in 1818. Later, between 1847 and 1849, Antoine Courty supervised the demolition of the west bell tower and the construction of the current bell tower. A cost estimate for repairs was still prepared in 1889 by architect Mazeaud, illustrating the ongoing efforts to preserve this heritage.

The church of Saint-Martial thus embodies a part of the religious and architectural history of Limousin, marked by the transitions between military orders, successive reconstructions and adaptations to local cultural needs. His inscription in the title of historic monuments in 1926 consecrated his heritage value, while recalling his central role in the community life of Gentioux-Pigerolles since the Middle Ages.
