Dolmen without table de Beg-ar-Vir (cad. A 37): by order of 27 December 1923

Origin and history

The Dolmen de Beg-ar-Vir, located in Porspoder in Finistère (Bretagne region), is a megalithic monument emblematic of the Neolithic period. This type of construction, characteristic of the prehistoric era, generally served as a collective burial or ritual place for local communities. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 27 December 1923, it bears witness to the importance of funeral and symbolic practices of that time.

In the Neolithic era, Brittany was populated by agropastoral societies organized in small groups. Dolmens, like Beg-ar-Vir, played a central role in spiritual and social life, marking the landscape and serving as landmarks for successive generations. Their construction reflects advanced technical know-how, particularly in the transport and assembly of massive stones.

These monuments, often associated with local legends, remain valuable remains to understand the beliefs and lifestyles of prehistoric populations in the region.
