Origin and history
The Dolmen de la Chassagne is a megalithic monument located in Saint-Cernin-de-Larche, in the department of Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Dated from Chalcolithic, it was listed as historical monuments in 1988. This site is distinguished by its tumulus, surrounded by an external trimming of 0.60 m in height, girding an 18 m in diameter and 2 m in height, which initially covered the dolmen.
Archaeological excavations revealed human teeth belonging to individuals of three distinct generations (child, adult, old), as well as funeral furniture composed of jayet and limestone beads, and a peduncle and aileron arrow point. These artifacts suggest a local neolithic culture, called caussenard, although some quartz-feldspathic degreasing pottery indicates more northern influences.
The site was the subject of a study published in 1980 in Gallia prehistory by Guy Mazière, which helped document its characteristics. Today, the dolmen is protected and located with a priori satisfactory accuracy (level 6/10), although its access and modalities of visit are not detailed in the available sources. Its cadastre is referenced under plots C 345 and C 346.
