Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is a fortified parish church whose origins date back at least to the end of the 12th century, with a mention of the parish at that time. In 1467, the building was already surrounded by fortifications, including a ditch, and its 15th-century bell tower, once painted in black, served as bitter for navigators. This bell tower, with a mâchicoulis parapet partially closed during the restorations of the 19th century, is pierced with archeries and classified as a historical monument since 1921.

The present structure of the church is largely the result of work carried out in the nineteenth century, including a reconstruction in 1862 by Massiou. However, ancient elements remain, such as a part of the right side wall and the 15th century bell tower, whose vault appears to be after its initial construction. The bell tower ends with an octagonal granite arrow, and the remains of the fortifications, including a higher bayut in corbelled archery, remain visible.

The parish of Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, attested as early as the 12th century, underwent major changes, especially in 1608 with important works. The church, owned by the commune, thus preserves traces of its medieval past while integrating more recent modifications. Its historical role includes a defensive function, as evidenced by archeries and mâchicoulis, as well as maritime utility thanks to its bell tower as a visual landmark.

Today, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption embodies an architectural heritage combining medieval heritage and modern restorations. Its bell tower, the most emblematic element, remains the only part classified as historical monuments, stressing its importance in local and regional history.
