Two pillars, on the national road: registration by decree of 4 October 1932
Origin and history
The pillars of Magny-en-Vexin are two architectural elements located on the national road crossing the commune. Built in the 18th century, they are a testament to the local heritage of this period, marked by road and urban developments in Île-de-France. Their presence reflects the growing importance of communication lines under the Old Regime, often linked to the economic and administrative development of rural areas.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 4 October 1932, these pillars are now owned by Magny-en-Vexin. Their inclusion in the supplementary inventory underlines their heritage value, although their exact location at 63 Rue de Paris is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10 depending on the sources). Their initial function, probably linked to a portal or symbolic delimitation, remains typical of 18th century road developments in France.
The Vexin region, to which Magny-en-Vexin belongs, was then a rural and agricultural area, where monuments of this type could serve as territorial landmarks or markers. Their preservation until today offers an overview of the construction techniques and aesthetic concerns of the time, while raising the question of their integration into the contemporary landscape. No information is available on their current accessibility or tourist use.
