Origin and history
The former convent of the Daughters of the Christian Union, located in Tours in Indre-et-Loire, dates from the 18th century. This religious monument, now partially disappeared, is best known for its entrance gate, a remarkable architectural element. It was listed as historical monuments by order of 27 June 1946, bearing witness to its heritage importance.
The gate, originally located on Rue de Lucé in Tours, once closed the enclosures of the convent. After the destruction by fire of the Baudry Hotel in 1940, whose entrance it was then decorated, it was moved to Rochecorbon around 1960. Today it is located at the 24 Quai de la Loire, at the entrance of the Wine Museum, where it remains accessible to the public. His pediment bears the monogram of the nuns, surmounted by a tiara framed by palms.
The chapel of the convent, for its part, was later assigned to Protestant worship, marking an evolution in the use of the place. Although the convent itself seems to have disappeared according to the sources of the DRAC, its grid constitutes the last tangible vestige of this heritage. Data from the Merimée database confirm its status as public property, managed by the Centre-Val de Loire region.
The monument is associated in the archives at the Manoir des Basses-Rivières, although the precise links between these two buildings are not detailed in the available sources. The exact location of the original convent remains uncertain, with an estimated accuracy of "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10) according to the heritage bases. The current GPS coordinates refer to the address of Rochecorbon, where the grid is still visible.
