Origin and history

The former Priory of Prévanches is a religious building located in the village of the same name, in Lozère (Occitan region). Built in the late 14th century or early 15th century, it is distinguished by its rectangular architecture and a north-east corner turret. Three gemini windows illuminate its structure, typical of this late medieval period. Accelerated to the parish church, it testifies to the importance of religious establishments in the local organization.

The priory was listed as historic monuments on June 29, 1931, recognizing its heritage value. Its precise location, at 4 Chemin Fontaine des Espradets, and its Insee code (48119) administratively attach it to the commune of Prévêches. Although sources mention its existence and protection, little information details its historical use or possible occupants.

In medieval times, priories played a central role in Occitan rural life. Places of prayer and land management, they also served as relays for pilgrims or travellers. The Lozère, a mountainous and urbanised region, saw these buildings become anchors for local communities, combining religious and economic functions.
