Granite road cross, dated 1526: by order of 24 November 1954

Origin and history

The road cross of Satillieu is a listed historical monument, located in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dated precisely from 1526, it is carved in granite and represents a typical example of the Renaissance road crosses. Its location, at approximately 36 Central Street, makes it a local heritage landmark.

Classified by ministerial decree on 24 November 1954, this cross belongs today to the municipality of Satillieu. Although its GPS location is considered of poor accuracy (note of 5/10), it remains an architectural and religious testimony of the first half of the 16th century. The cross-roads, at that time, often served as landmarks, places of prayer or protection for travellers.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the 16th century was marked by an intense rural and artisanal life, where religious monuments played a central role in community life. These crosses, often erected at crossroads or at village entrances, also symbolized the Christian faith and divine protection against the dangers of the road. Their presence reflected the importance of religion in the social and spatial organization of the territories.
