Stone road cross dated 1522: classification by decree of 14 June 1909

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de Rebeuville is a historical monument located in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. Dated from the first quarter of the sixteenth century, more precisely from 1522 according to the protected elements, it is characteristic of the stone road crosses erected at that time. These monuments often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks for travellers and local residents, marking rural roads or village entrances.

Classified by ministerial decree on 14 June 1909, this cross is now owned by the municipality of Rebeuville. Its location, reported at approximately 550 Rue de la Voie de Rollainville, reflects its integration into the local historical and cultural landscape. The accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), suggesting a moderate geographical identification in heritage databases.

The road crosses, like Rebeuville, played an important social and religious role in the 16th century. They could mark gathering places, prayer points, or commemorate local events. In a region such as Lorraine, which was marked by limited rural life and exchanges, these monuments also served as visual landmarks in often forested or hilly landscapes. Their presence illustrates the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of the then village communities.
