Origin and history
The windmill of La Tranchée is an iconic 18th-century building located in the commune of Montsoreau in the department of Maine-et-Loire. Angevin cavier type, it is distinguished by its polygonal structure in tuffeau, reinforced with buttress, and its neat massager supporting the hicherolle. This flour mill, overlooking the Loire, is part of the Saumur wine landscape, bearing witness to the traditional milling activity of the region.
The monument includes a main cellar leading to the millstones room, as well as two other cellars fitted out in housing and stables. These elements illustrate its versatile use, combining agricultural production and habitat. It is listed as a historical monument by order of 30 March 1978 and enjoys heritage protection for its characteristic architecture and its role in local history.
The Mill of La Tranchée is part of a series of historical monuments in Maine-et-Loire, reflecting the importance of windmills in the Angelian rural economy. Its precise location at 49 Rue du Moulin de la Tranchée and its state of conservation make it a remarkable example of the industrial and artisanal heritage of the Pays de la Loire region.
