Origin and history
The hospital of Chagny, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, was built in the early eighteenth century. Founded in 1700, the hospital gradually expanded to a "E" form, with apothecary completed in 1715 in the west wing. This place, adorned with painted marble woodwork and trompe-l'oeil pilasters, houses a collection of 18th and 19th century pharmacy pots, which bear witness to its historical medical use.
Apothecary was protected by an inscription to historical monuments in 2014, followed by a ranking in 2017 covering its interiors, including the sealed office and the poison cabinet built into the wall. Among the protected objects are pharmaceutical pots, two bells (1606 and 1741), a 17th-century Virgin with a Child's Paste Card, and copper and tin utensils related to hospital activity. These elements illustrate the evolution of medical practices and the heritage importance of the site.
The monument is also linked to Charles de La Bouthière, Baron of Chagny and founder of the hospital, whose painted portrait is kept on site. A cartel (clock applied) and other ancient objects complete this heritage, reflecting local history and 18th century hospital architecture. Recent protection campaigns have strengthened the preservation of this emblematic site of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
