Land area containing the remains of the underground refuge, 30m in length and 20m in depth, and the Gallic steles contained therein (cad. E 252): classification by decree of 31 January 1958

Origin and history

The remains of the Gallic subterraneans of Trézéan are located in the commune of Pédernec, in the department of Côtes-d'Armor, in Brittany. This archaeological site consists of an underground network extending 30 metres long and 20 metres deep, including side chambers. Two of these rooms housed truncated Gaulish steles about 1.50 metres high, now kept off site. A third octagonal stele, still in place, is visible in one of the rooms, introduced by an orifice dug into the ceiling.

The site was partially classified as historical monuments by decree of 31 January 1958, thus recognizing its heritage importance. The underground shelters, typical of the Gaulish era, probably served as shelters or storage places for local populations. Their architecture and associated steles testify to the cultural and technical practices of the Gauls in this region.

The steles discovered on the site, of truncated or octagonal form, are remarkable elements of this heritage. Their presence suggests a ritual or commemorative use, although their exact function remains subject to interpretation. The Trezean site, with its well preserved remains, offers valuable insight into the lives and beliefs of the Gallic communities in Armorica.
