Origin and history
Carol's viaduct, built in 1912 on the river of the same name, is a 158-metre long masonry railway structure. It was built for the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi to serve the Toulouse-Puigcerda line, south of the village of Porta, in Cerdagne. This stone bridge, located at kilometre 155,299, illustrates the effort to develop trans-Pyrenean infrastructure at the beginning of the 20th century.
The viaduct entered service in 1925, marking a key step in the railway connection between France and Spain via the Catalan border. It was included in the inventory of historic monuments on 28 December 1984, recognizing its heritage value. Today, there remains an architectural testimony of the railway networks of altitude and engineering of the time.
Owned by the State via the SNCF, the viaduct is located precisely at 81 Chemin du Vieux Relais, La Codina, in the commune of Porta (code INSEE 66146). Its inscription specifically concerns the structure itself (cadastral park C 629), stressing its importance in the industrial and historical landscape of the Pyrénées-Orientales.
