Origin and history

Montferrand Castle is a medieval building located on the heights of Banassac, in Lozère, in the former province of Gevaudan. Today in ruins, it overlooks the Lot Valley and the Booz water body, offering a strategic view of the surroundings. This castle played a major defensive role, controlling the road linking Gevaudan to Rouergue, while protecting neighbouring villages such as Banassac and La Canourgue.

The comptors of Montferrand, the local lords, made it their seat and exercised a power comparable to that of the other barons of Gevaudan. Their authority included the mandate of Saint-Germain-du-Teil. The castle was also associated with a right of entry for individual States, reflecting its political and administrative importance in the region.

A notable character related to this castle is Amphelisee de Montferrand, often mistakenly confused with Amphelisee de Sabran. She was born there and was the mother of Pope Urban V, a historical link that marks the importance of this family in local and religious medieval history.

Today, although partially in ruins, the castle remains accessible and bears witness to the defensive architecture and seigneurial power of Gevaudan in the late Middle Ages. Its strategic location and history make it a key element of the Lozian heritage.
