Origin and history
The Château de Coulennes is a building located in the commune of Loué, in the department of Sarthe (region Pays de la Loire). Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, it is distinguished by its long house and quadrangular land surrounded by moat. Parts of the castle, including facades, chapel and moat, have been protected as historical monuments since 1977.
The seigneury of Coulennes belonged to the Le Clerc family for almost four centuries, from 1329, when Marthe Poussin, the lady of Juigné and Coulennes, owned it. More recently occupied by the Richemont family between 1979 and 2005, the estate was later acquired by Jean Delgorgue. The castle is located in the valley of the Vègre, near the villages of Loué and Chassillé.
The architecture of the castle reflects its different periods of construction, with characteristic elements from the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. Its inscription to historical monuments in 1977 specifically covers facades, roofs, chapel, moats and their corner turrets. These protections highlight the heritage importance of this historic site in Maine.
