Castle (rests): list by 1840

Origin and history

The castle of Montreuil-Bonnin, now reduced to remains, is located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Vienna, in the New Aquitaine region. Ranked Historical Monument by the list of 1840, it illustrates the heritage importance of the medieval or post-medieval buildings in this area, although its precise history and original architectural features remain little documented in the available sources. In Vienna, as in much of the historic Poitou-Charentes, castles played a central role in the local social and economic organization.

They often served as administrative centres, defence sites or seigneurial residences. Their presence reflected the feudal hierarchy and power dynamics between lords, rural communities and emerging cities. These monuments, even partially disappeared, remain essential markers of regional history.
