Origin and history

Nescus Castle, located in the Ariège department in Occitanie region, was erected in 1700. This neoclassical monument, characterized by a round tower and a crenellated square tower, dominates the landscape at 426 meters above sea level, east of the village of Nescus. It is separated from the hamlet of Ballé by the river Arize and accessible by the departmental road 15. Its history is marked by periods of destruction and rebirth, reflecting the political and social upheavals of France.

During the French Revolution, the castle was demolished and rebuilt in the 19th century. A fire in 1918 severely damaged the structure, requiring major renovation. The castle changed hands several times: it belonged first to Alberic de Narbonne-Lara (1859-1909), then to the Carmelites de Pamiers, before being acquired by the town hall of Paris to make it a place of holiday colonies. After decades of abandonment and degradation due to squatters, it was auctioned in October 2022 for 118 000 €, with the aim of integrating tourism, culture, and social housing.

Architecturally, the castle extends over about 1,400 m2 and is surrounded by a 2.2 hectare park. The current project envisages the creation of a tourist centre (houses, guest rooms), a garden centre (painting and gardening), a cultural centre (spectacles, concerts), and a social centre (accommodation). This project aims to reintegrate the castle into local life while valuing its historical and natural heritage.

Nescus Castle illustrates the successive transformations of a monument through the centuries, from an aristocratic residence to a holiday place, to an ambitious community project. Its neo-classical architecture and park make it a remarkable site of Ariège, while at the same time testifying to the challenges of preserving the rural heritage in France.
