Origin and history

The Château de La Plaze, located in Omps in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, was erected in 1783 on the ruins of an old 16th century fortress castle. This monument illustrates the architectural transition to the classic style of the late 18th century, with a vocation as a marina. Its location on a terrace dominates a garden in steps inspired by Italian models, reflecting the influence of landscape trends of the era.

Inside, the castle preserves original 18th-century decorations such as woodwork, stucco and fireplaces, reflecting the refinement of the craftsmanship of this period. In the mid-19th century, artist William Laparra added landscape paintings in medallion, in an Italian style, thus enriching his artistic heritage. These elements give the castle a double identity, both classic and romantic.

The castle was listed as historic monuments by order of 14 June 2002, thus recognizing its heritage value. The protection covers the entire building, including its interior decorations, barn and terraced gardens. This status underlines its importance as a preserved example of architecture and decorative art of the 18th and 19th centuries in Auvergne.

Architecturally, the main house, flanked by two common pavilions and a large barn, embodies the aesthetic cannons of the time. The combination of utility (grange) and residential elements (logis, decorated salons) reveals an adaptation of spaces to the needs of a changing nobility, seeking to combine comfort and social representation.

The castle of La Plaze is part of the cultural landscape of the Cantal, as evidenced by its references in the lists of historical monuments and castles of the region. Its history reflects the evolution of lifestyles and artistic tastes between the Ancien Régime and the 19th century, while remaining anchored in its rural territory.
