Origin and history

The former convent of the Ladies of Sainte-Élisabeth, founded in the 4th quarter of the 17th century, later became the National Veterinary School of Lyon after the Revolution. In the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, the architect Chabrol renovated the buildings, which now house the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon (CNSMD). These premises, located at Quai Chauveau in the 9th arrondissement, were inaugurated in 1988 after a renovation led by Espace Built between 1985 and 1988.

The CNSMD in Lyon was created by decree in 1980, at the initiative of local personalities such as René Brot and Simone du Breuil, with the support of Prime Minister Raymond Barre. Originally installed on Rue de l'Angile (5th arrondissement), in 1988 it moved to the historic buildings of the Deux-Amants fence, offering modern infrastructure: 110 teaching rooms, two auditoriums, a Grenzing organ, and the Nadia-Boulanger media library. The dance department, created in 1984, settled in the attic of abundance, quay Saint Vincent.

The conservatory developed under the direction of figures such as Pierre Cochereau (1979–1984) and Gilbert Amy (from 1984), expanding its curricula to dance, organ and contemporary disciplines. In 2009, he officially became the National Conservatory of Music and Dance, reflecting his dual field of excellence. Today, he trains music and dance professionals, with international partnerships and artistic research programs.

The buildings, marked by their religious and then educational history, symbolize the transition between heritage heritage and educational innovation. Their architecture, combining 17th-century structures and 19th-century amenities, makes it an emblematic place for Lyon culture. The CNSMD maintains a tradition of excellence while opening up to contemporary creation, as evidenced by its workshops (XX-21) and its collaborations with art schools.

In 2023, the conservatory was confronted with a judicial case involving a professor, Jean Tubéry, who was sentenced in 2024 for inappropriate remarks. This episode recalls the ethical issues of cultural institutions, without altering the academic reputation of the institution. CNSMD remains a major player in artistic training in France, combining historical heritage and creative dynamism.
