Origin and history
The castle of Westhove was erected around 1903-1904 in a neo-Renaissance architectural style, typical of early twentieth century eclecticism. Located in Blendecques, near the river Aa, it was surrounded by a vast landscaped park. This monument reflects the influence of historical models in the bourgeois construction of the era, combining elegance and functionality.
During World War II, the castle served as Kommandantur to the German army until 1943, when it became the property of the commune. After the conflict, the complex was transformed into a sports centre: the grounds of the park hosted sports facilities, while the interiors of the castle were made into changing rooms. This reconversion illustrates the adaptation of historic buildings to the social needs of the post-war period.
Closed to the public in 2004, the castle of Westhove is today banned from access and completely vandalized. Despite its partial inclusion in the Historic Monuments in 2011 (total protection of the castle), the absence of maintenance led to its degradation. The site, once a place of power and leisure, now symbolizes the challenges of preserving the heritage of the twentieth century.
The official address of the monument, listed in the Mérimée base, is 144 rue Jean Jaurès in Blendecques (Pas-de-Calais). The Insee code of the commune (62139) confirms its anchoring in the department, in the heart of the Hauts-de-France. The GPS coordinates available suggest a satisfactory location, although the monument is no longer accessible.
