Château de l'Espinasse (including the court) (Box H 452): inscription by order of 24 April 1961

Origin and history

The Château de Lespinasse, located in Saint-Beauzire in the department of Haute-Loire (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a military building dating mainly from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Its crenellated dungeon, erected in 1358, is equipped with mâchicoulis and a tower of staircase in corbellation, characteristic of medieval fortifications. This dungeon forms the heart of the inner courtyard, connected by an irregular ramp to a 16th-century building, probably equipped with a corner stick. The niches, abolished in 1793 during the Revolution, bear witness to the transformations that the castle has undergone over the centuries.

East of the dungeon, a house body built in 1450 spreads, flanked by two towers pierced by murderers. These interior spaces conserve 18th-century woodwork, notably in Louis XV style, as well as a 15th-century fireplace decorated with an Auvergne arms shield. The spiral staircase, located in the courtyard, serves the entire building, illustrating the evolution of the functions of the castle, from a defensive vocation to rural use in the 20th century.

The Château de Lespinasse was listed as a historical monument by order of 24 April 1961, thus recognizing its heritage value. The architectural changes, such as the addition of woodwork or the removal of niches, reflect the successive adaptations of the monument to the needs of its occupants, between medieval security and modern residential comfort.
