Origin and history
The castle of Saint-Pierre-du-Jonquet, also called the Jonquet castle or house of fields, is a building built in the middle of the eighteenth century for the Honfleur shipowner Leroi-Beaulieu. Located in Calvados, Normandy, it illustrates the residential architectural style of the period, with a courtyard of honour, gardens lined with ditches, and richly decorated interiors (pathways, panelling, ceilings). Its exceptional state of conservation makes it a rare testimony of the art of living of Norman merchant elites.
The billiard room, renovated in 1818, houses a remarkable wallpaper from the Dufour manufacture, representing the Greek holidays and Olympic Games. This decoration, classified as historical monuments in 1996, contrasts with the rest of the building, remained faithful to its original state. The castle as a whole (building, courtyard, gardens) was inscribed in 1995, highlighting its heritage value.
Originally owned by a shipowner, the castle reflects the social rise of Honfleurese traders in the 18th century, drawing their wealth from the maritime trade. Its opening to the public during the Heritage Days and in summer allows you to discover this heritage, where you can mix classical heritage and romantic touches. Guided tours highlight its history, from its construction to its successive protections.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a historical monument, with a precise location in Saint-Pierre-du-Jonquet (code INSEE 14651). The Château du Jonquet is distinguished by its authenticity, having retained all its interior and exterior arrangements, a rare case for the houses of this time in Normandy.
