Origin and history

The castle of Barbaste, located Place de la Poste in Barbaste (Lot-et-Garonne), was built in the first half of the seventeenth century. He was associated with Carbon du Faulong, intendant of the hunts of the king of Navarre Henry III and commander of the towers of Barbaste in 1588. Although its construction dates from the 17th century, its history dates back to the end of the 16th century with the Carbon family of Faulong, linked to the supervision of Henri de Navarre (future Henri IV) during his forced residence at the Towers of Barbaste.

In 1841, the castle was divided into two distinct properties. The southern part, transferred in 1879 to the Barbaste Charitable Office, now houses the local post office. The northern part, ravaged by a fire in 1933, lost much of its structure. The outbuildings, including 18th-century stables, were destroyed, leaving only the main body of the building to survive. The castle was listed as historical monuments on 12 September 1977 for its facades and roofs.

Architecturally, the castle is characterized by a broken hipped roof, towers covered with flat or hollow tiles, and a U-shaped courtyard visible on the 1837 cadastre. Protected elements include facades and roofs, while the property now belongs to the municipality. Its history reflects the social and political transformations of the region, from its role under Jeanne d'Albret to its present function shared between public service and historical vestige.
