Origin and history

The Château de Chenereilles, located in the municipality of the same name in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a monument dating back to the thirteenth century. Its first structures, including the dungeon and facades on the inner courtyard, bear witness to this medieval period, with subsequent modifications in the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. These elements, classified by decree of 21 February 1983, illustrate the defensive and residential evolution of the site over centuries.

A major phase of transformation took place in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, marking the adaptation of the castle to the architectural cannons of the time. The unclassified parts, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, were inscribed in the same way as the dungeon in 1983. The monument thus reflects a superposition of styles, from medieval vestiges to more recent additions, typical of castles that have passed through the eras.

The location of the castle, at 80 Route des Croix Blanches in Chenereilles (code Insee 42060), is documented with a priori satisfactory accuracy (level 6/10). Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation), its status as Historic Monument underscores its heritage importance. Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives confirm its anchoring in local and regional history.

The historical context of Chenereilles, village of the Loire, is marked by a rural and artisanal economy in the 13th-14th centuries, when the castles played a central role in the feudal organization. The dungeon, a key defence element, symbolized seigneurial power and the protection of the population. The reshuffles of the 18th to 19th centuries coincide with the weakening of feudal structures and the emergence of more comfortable aristocratic residences, reflecting the social changes of the Old Regime and the Industrial Revolution.
